How to see home much storage/disk space you have left |
|
|
Finding out how much space is left on your computer or how much space you have on your computer total is something very simple, but it can also sound daunting. This tutorial will take you through the process in under a minute.
If you are using a Windows machine, XP, 2000, 98, or Vista it really doesn't matter, the steps are the same. If you are using a Mac they are similar.
Windows
Step 1First, click on the start button. Do you see or something similar?
If you do see it, double click on it and go to Step 2
If you don't see 'My Computer' that is because it's probably on your desktop. To view your desktop you will have to minimize this window and any other windows you have open and you can do a few ways.
Either way the goal is to find (Or a similar looking icon) and double click on it.
My favorite way to view the desktop is to use a shortcut that I probably use ten times a day. Hit the <Windows> and <d> key on your keyboard at the same time. If that doesn't work or you don't have that key then minimize all of your windows by clicking on the minus sign in the top right of them.
Step 2So now you have found My Computer and opened it by double clicking. You should see a listing of drives and other removable storage and even possibly some folders. Depending which Windows version you have the icon will look different . Depending on your configuration you may have multiple hard drives or 'partitions'.
'Partitions' are a way of splitting one hard drive into multiple hard drives. Chances are you have one hard drive and its called C:, or it is named something followed by (C:). On my window XP computer it looks like this. Did you find it?
If so, then goto Step 3
If you don't see the C drive it could be named any letter of the alphabet. And you might have a C, D, F, and Z or any combinatioon of letters and names. If you still arent sure I am going to assume you are looking to find disk space on your 'Primary Drive' i.e. the drive that windows in installed on and your documents are stored on. To be sure it is the primary drive there is a simple test you can do.
Double click on the drive you think might be the correct drive
Once it opens you should see the contents of the drive, and a bunch of folders. If you look through the names of each of these folders you should see 'Windows' is one of these folders. This means you've made it. Now you need to get back to where you were. This can be done by going back to the window with all the folders displated and hitting the <Backspace> key, or by hitting the back or up button when you have that window in focus.
FYI! The three most important default folders on your computer are 'Windows', 'Program Files', and 'Documents and Settings' .
Step 3Now for the last step, lets see what that drive has on it. There is a very simple trick in windows to see the disk usage, or how much space a folder, drive, file, document, picture, video, anything is currently using. Ready?
Open the My computer windows and move your mouse over the icon. Wait about 2 seconds. Do you see?

If you do then you've made it. My disk has 20 free gigabytes and has a total size of 86.4 gigabytes or gigs. Pat yourself on the back!
If you don't see the disk size give the mouse over method one more try, do this by clicking on the white space next to the Icon, essentially on nothing, then hold the mouse over it again. Any luck?
If the mouse over strategy isn't working there is another very simple way to view more details and even a nice graphical representation. And its simple!
Right click on the drive and choose 'Properties', which is usually at the bottom.
Now that you have clicked on properties you will get you disk usage.
The short of it is, again, that my drive is Total 86 GB, there is 66 Used, and 20 free.
Some Tips we learned or could use along the way
- Using <Windows> <d> is the quickest way to view the files on your desktop
- A window being 'In Focus' means that it is the last window you clicked on.
- You can do the mouse over trick on any file. Try viewing your desktop then holding the mouse over a different file like the recycle bin!
