I spent the better part of a week trying different tutorials and ways to get my Radeon 9700 set up to work with Ubuntu Desktop 7.10. (Advance Desktop Effects are a must)  All the tutorials I found were steering me in so many directions I called an expert to see what he thought was the best way. He reccomended I simply revert everything back to how it was and follow a few steps. His explanation fit in a sentence, but since I am not yet a desktop linux master I'll diagram the steps out for the rest of us.

If you just put a fresh copy of Ubuntu on you are set and don't have to check anything.Start at the blue line below.

First: Make sure you have all the ubuntu default settings, make sure you don't have the ATI driver installed make sure xserver-org is not installed.

>apt-get uninstall xserver-xorg
Or just find it in synaptic and remove it that way.

So now you should be running on vesa drivers with whatever screen you have. (I have a Olevia 36' widescreen). You can check this by running

>fglrxinfo

There you will see the word vesa. Thats means you are where you need to be.

So now go up to Systems -> Administartion -> restricted drivers manager.

You should see the ATI accelerated graphics driver. Check the box that to enable it.

Now I did a restart and I got some problems with the screen, thats ok, just get to a command line somehow.

The easiest way is before it asks you to login, or if the display dies and you never see the ubuntu graphical login screen just hit <crtl><alt><f1> and you will get the shell you are looking for.

From there I went and backed up and removed my xorg.conf file.
>sudo su
Enter your password!

>cd /etc/X11
>mv xorg.conf oldxorg.conf

Now you need to run
> dpkg-configuer xserver-xorg

From there let xserver autodetect everything and when I rebooted I typed fglrxinfo and saw.
display: :0.0  screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: RADEON 9700 PRO
OpenGL version string: 2.0.6473 (8.37.6)

Then I could go up to Desktop Settings and check Advanced Desktop Settings. I will be putting a video on youtube with what I find. I'll probably put it in my content here!
